What is Progesterone Cream?

A transdermal option for members who don't tolerate oral progesterone drowsiness. Applied to the inner arm or thigh nightly. Your clinician determines whether it's appropriate for endometrial protection alongside your estrogen.

What to expect

What to expect

  • Less drowsiness — The main practical advantage over oral micronized progesterone.
  • Variable absorption — How much you absorb is individual, which affects how it is used.
  • Rotate the site — Reduces irritation and keeps absorption more consistent.
  • Discuss the role — Your clinician will explain where cream fits versus capsules in your protocol.

How to dose

Apply 0.25-0.5 mL (5-10 mg) to inner arm or thigh nightly; per clinician protocol

Risks & side effects

There is no FDA approved topical or transdermal progesterone product, so there is no FDA reviewed safety label for this cream and no established side effect rate. How much reaches the bloodstream from a cream has not been established, which matters if it is being used to protect the uterus lining alongside estrogen. Ask your clinician about that specifically.

Tell your care team straight away if you get chest pain or shortness of breath, pain or swelling in a leg, a sudden severe headache, unusual vaginal bleeding, or a rash where you applied it.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Message your care team about any symptom that worries you. What we dispense is a compounded preparation made by a licensed US pharmacy. Compounded medications are not approved by the FDA for safety, efficacy or quality.

Common questions

How does the cream compare to capsules?

Transdermal progesterone avoids the drowsiness that oral micronized progesterone commonly causes. However, absorption is more variable, and transdermal progesterone is generally not considered sufficient for endometrial protection on its own.

Can I use it instead of capsules if I have a uterus?

Usually not. If you are taking estrogen and have a uterus, your clinician will typically prescribe oral micronized progesterone for endometrial protection. Cream is more often used in other contexts.

How is it applied?

Once or twice daily to clean, dry skin, rotating sites as directed. Wash your hands afterwards.

What are the common side effects?

Skin irritation at the site, breast tenderness and mood changes are the most reported. Rotating sites reduces irritation.
