What is Topiramate used for here?

At the low doses used for weight, topiramate reduces appetite and the pull of cravings. It is prescribed off-label and titrated slowly, because most of its side effects rise with dose. Because it carries a known pregnancy risk, contraception is part of the conversation before you start.

What to expect

What to expect

  • Slow titration — The dose rises gradually because side effects track the dose.
  • Tingling is common — Usually mild, often settles, worth reporting if it does not.
  • Taste can change — Fizzy drinks are the classic example. It reverses on stopping.
  • Contraception required — This is not appropriate in pregnancy, and that is confirmed before you start.

Common questions

Is this a weight-loss drug?

Topiramate is approved for epilepsy and migraine. Use for weight is off-label and at much lower doses, based on its well-documented effect on appetite.

What is the tingling people describe?

A pins-and-needles sensation in the hands and feet is the most commonly reported effect. It is usually mild and often settles, but tell your clinician if it does not.

Does it really change how drinks taste?

For some people, yes — carbonated drinks in particular can taste flat or metallic. It is harmless and reverses on stopping.

Can I take this if I might become pregnant?

No. Topiramate carries a known risk of birth defects. Effective contraception is required throughout treatment, and this is confirmed before prescribing.
