What is PT-141?

PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a central-nervous-system melanocortin agonist for hypoactive sexual desire in men and women — it works on the brain's arousal pathways, not blood flow. Self-administered subcutaneously as needed. Blood pressure screened before prescribing.

What to expect

What to expect

  • Desire, not blood flow — This works on a different pathway than the familiar oral tablets.
  • Plan ahead — Taken as an injection some time before activity rather than immediately prior.
  • Nausea is common — It is the most frequently reported effect and varies a lot between people.
  • Frequency is limited — This is on-demand use with a cap, not a daily medication.

How to dose

Inject 0.1-0.175 mL (1-1.75 mg) subcutaneously as needed at least 45 minutes before anticipated activity; maximum 1 dose per 24 hours and 8 doses per month

Risks & side effects

Bremelanotide is FDA approved only for low sexual desire in premenopausal women. The label states it is not indicated in postmenopausal women, not in men, and not to enhance sexual performance.

Tell your care team straight away if your blood pressure climbs or you get a severe headache after a dose, you cannot stop vomiting, you notice new dark patches on your face, gums or breasts, you get chest pain, or your heartbeat becomes very slow.

Common side effects

  • nausea
  • flushing
  • a reaction where the injection was given
  • headache
  • vomiting

Rare but serious

  • a temporary rise in blood pressure
  • a slower heart rate
  • darkening of the skin that may not fade
  • nausea severe enough to stop treatment

Do not take this if you have high blood pressure that is not controlled, or you have known heart disease.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Message your care team about any symptom that worries you. What we dispense is a compounded preparation made by a licensed US pharmacy. Compounded medications are not approved by the FDA for safety, efficacy or quality.

Common questions

How is PT-141 different from sildenafil or tadalafil?

PT-141 acts on pathways in the brain associated with sexual desire, rather than on blood flow. That makes it a different tool — it targets low desire rather than difficulty with erections, and it is used by both men and women.

How is it taken?

As a small subcutaneous injection roughly 45 minutes to a few hours before activity. It is used on demand, not daily.

What are the common side effects?

Nausea is the most common and can be significant for some people, along with flushing and headache. Some users notice temporary darkening of the skin with repeated use.

How often can I use it?

Use is limited to a maximum frequency your clinician will specify — it is not intended for daily use. Follow the guidance that comes with your prescription.
