What is Oral Semaglutide?

Semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. Whether that happens in people is not known.
Tell your care team straight away if you feel a lump or swelling in your neck, your voice goes hoarse or swallowing becomes hard, you get severe stomach pain that will not stop, you cannot keep fluids down, you get pain in your upper right belly or your eyes turn yellow, or your face, lips or tongue swell.

Do not take this if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or you have reacted badly to semaglutide before.

Common questions
How is the tablet taken?
Once daily on an empty stomach with no more than about half a glass of plain water, then nothing to eat, drink or take for at least 30 minutes. Absorption depends on following this closely.
Is it as effective as the injection?
Oral semaglutide is generally less potent milligram for milligram than the injectable form, and absorption is more variable. For some people the convenience is worth it — that is a discussion with your clinician.
What if I forget a dose?
Skip it and take the next one at your usual time. Do not double up. Because timing rules are strict, a consistent morning routine helps.
What are the common side effects?
Nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and reflux are the most common, and are usually worst in the days after a dose increase. Eating smaller portions more slowly helps. Tell your clinician about anything severe or persistent.
What happens if I stop?
Appetite generally returns and weight regain is common without other changes in place. This is why the habits you build during treatment matter as much as the medication.
Who should not take this?
It is not appropriate if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, and it is not for use in pregnancy. Your intake covers the full list of contraindications.
